How It Works

It’s not magic – it’s science!

The FRE-FLO unit acts a catalytic water conditioner that creates a soft calcium carbonate crystal.

The FRE-FLO unit acts a catalytic water conditioner that creates a soft calcium carbonate crystal. It is non-magnetic and non-sacrificial, neither adding nor subtracting anything to the water. Simply put, it controls scale by the core of the FRE-FLO unit converting a portion of the calcium and carbonate ions that are dissolved in water into a “soft, smooth” calcium carbonate crystal.

Typical hard water scale is composed of aragonite crystals.

These crystals have the familiar sand paper feel of hard water deposits. The FRE-FLO unit mimics nature by epitaxial nucleation, forcing the crystalline structure of calcium carbonate to form a smoother, more spherical shape in the form of vaterite. As with any spherical shape, it is difficult to build up any deposit. Think of attempting to stack ball bearings. You would be unsuccessful, as the smooth ball bearings would slide off of each other.

Although now exhibiting the vaterite crystalline structure, the calcium carbonate still remains calcium carbonate. It is simply in a different physical form. Think of the element carbon. In one case carbon creates one of the hardest substances on the planet, the diamond. In another case, the same carbon element forms a lubricant called graphite.

These are the same elements with differing physical properties.
